Andy Williams, 84, one of the classic American crooners who’s known for his smooth voice and homely charm, has died Tuesday at his home in Branso. The news of his death, along with his legendary song “Moon River”, was on TV all day yesterday. How could one be focused with such a beautiful song, Moon River, lingering in the office? Every time the music started, I looked up and moaned, “Where is the bartender?” or “I want to go home…”
The song was first performed by Audrey Hepburn in the movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Holly Golightly, acted by Hepburn, sings it at the fire escape outside her apartment where Paul Varjak, the “prince” of the movie, discovers her. This beautiful song won 1961 Academy Award for Best Original Song. Wow, 1961… I have not been born yet. Like my many friends, I was reminded of it by a TV drama, Sex and the City.
Since its release, the song was performed by many other artists but it became an iconic song of Andy Williams. Mr. Williams did it very well. You won’t forget the song with his lovely, mellow, sweet voice. Some singers are just amazing; they can add value to whatever musical piece but some just don’t. Shh…we are not supposed to tell our true feelings to people who don’t. Why? I don’t know. It’s kind of rule. Some people just can’t take any criticism.
